Oh, I can see that smile on your face!
Hello! How are you doing today? You didn’t expect that could ever happen, did you? That your fun beauty and fashion purchases could actually be considered a business expense? Well, they certainly can be. And I’ll explain. (Disclaimer: I am not a CPA or financial expert. This is from my personal experience being a small business owner for many years. You may want to consult your own financial expert, and you can find information on what is considered advertising expense by doing an internet search.) Okay, let’s go!
Firstly, when you sign up as an Avon Representative, you are actually opening up your very own small business. You are representing and selling Avon’s product, but you are an Independent entity, so therefore, you are running your very own business just as you would any other small business. And in any business you have business expenses, one being advertising. And what do you purchase to advertise a beauty and fashion business? You purchase beauty and fashion items, right? Ta-Da!
This is one of my favorite perks. I always plan and strategize which products I want to advertise. I always choose products that interest me, that I would like to try so that I can demonstrate and/or review them as advertisement, thus, the product is then an advertising tool. Products can be purchased to use and demonstrate, and give out as samples (there are sample sizes available to purchase and hand out as well). You can advertise your Avon products in many ways; Use them and review them online or in person, take pictures of the products and post on your Social Media, Blog, YouTube, etc., hand out as samples, or you can record yourself using the products and post videos. Just any way that your imagination leads you. Avon also offers free courses in promotion in Avon U. (Perk!)
So, you can try new makeups, perfumes, wear new fashion jewelry, new fashion, shoes, try the latest and greatest skincare (Avon’s are famous!), home products, and now even new pet products, and they can be used for advertising, and then when you earn $600+ in commissions (which is then reported to the IRS), your advertising purchases can be deducted from that income as advertising expense. Be sure to keep a record of the products that you purchased and used for your advertising, and there you go!
Other advertising expense would be your business cards, website hosting fees, anything and everything that you use to promote your (Avon’s) product line.
So, as I always go around singing, “I’m having fun and making money!”, you can too.
Another great perk about having an Avon beauty business, is that Avon pays all your State sales tax for you. If you’ve ever been in business for yourself before then you’ll know that this is a HUGE perk. You do not have to collect sales tax and then pay it in either quarterly or yearly. I love this so much.
And yet another great perk is that you get paid right away with Avon. Avon does not hold your commission as you try to accumulate a certain amount of sales. You get paid right away for each and every sale you make. You can sign up for Direct Deposit, and then when your customer(s) purchase online in your Avon store (no minimum order amount either), you receive an automatic deposit into your account in just a few days after your customer is billed. Just enjoy that money flowing in from your advertising Avon’s wonderful products.
And if you prefer to sell in person rather than online, that’s cool too, or you can do both. But in order for your purchases to be allowed as an advertising expense, you do have to show or demonstrate that product in an advertising capacity intended to bring in more business.
