Avon’s Patriotic Role in World War II

Hey Gang! Happy Saturday to you!

I know this is kind of an off-the-wall subject to be bringing you today, but you know Avon is celebrating their 135th year, and with that they have been sharing a lot of Avon history, offering fabulous beauty bundle deals, gifts, and much more.

Well, with me being a huge history buff, this story really caught my attention. I had no idea that Avon had played any role in WWII, and bonus news, Avon was later an official sponsor of the Statue of Liberty’s centennial makeover in 1986. Wow!

Here is Avon’s official statement on their remarkable history:

Leading The Way

Founder David H. McConnell started Avon based on the revolutionary concept that women could earn an independent income, run their own business and contribute to their community.

Avon played an active role in war-time efforts, awarding the Avon Medallion of Honor to service women and nurses, and calling for action and support. Like many industries, Avon retooled half its factories to produce products for the war effort including insect repellent and gas mask canisters. Avon supported the Red Cross and made supplies and first aid kits during World War II and Avon was an official sponsor of the Statue of Liberty’s centennial makeover in 1986.

As if I weren’t already proud to be a member of the Avon family!

And, as a part of the Avon family, Avon is offering us Representatives a chance to earn this commemorative keychain:

CPC stands for California Perfume Company, which was Avon’s first company name in 1886. Here is some more brief Avon history for you:

History

In 1886, 34 years before women in the U.S. earned the right to vote, Avon’s founder, David H. McConnell, helped give them the chance to earn an independent income. He didn’t set out to create a beauty company. In fact, McConnell was a traveling book salesperson who offered fragrances samples as an additional perk to his female customers. He saw that these women were more interested in the free perfume than the books. Since women had a passion for his products and loved networking with other women, McConnell was inspired to recruit them as Sales Representatives. From a small New York City office, McConnell himself mixed the company’s first fragrances.

This began Avon’s long history of empowering women around the globe.

According to Avon’s history timeline, it looks like California Perfume Company’s first brochure was issued in 1896. Wow!

And, I can certainly relate to our founder, since I was once a perfumer myself. Love that!

Well, I’m keeping my finger’s crossed that I will be awarded a commemorative keychain, it will be fabulous to have a small piece of Avon history of my very own.
