So What’s all the Buzz about Cacao Being Better Than Fluoride for Healthy Teeth?

Well… Let me share a little with you from my recent discovery journey, and also share a bit about myself. I am curious by nature, I love to learn new things, and I also love the use of natural/healthy ingredients in any and every thing as much as possible.

With that said, you can probably figure out why I was curious about Avon’s new toothpastes that are not using fluoride. I have heard and read that fluoride is not really the best thing for us, but what else are they going to put in toothpastes to strengthen and remineralize our teeth?

Well, I found out, kind of accidentally. But I’m certainly glad I did.

Here’s the Avon Perioe toothpaste that started my quest.

Perioe Royal Black Bee Toothpaste

Okay — you’re probably like, well, this is a honey toothpaste, and that is a shocker too, right?

Right! That’s what fascinated me so much about it from the get-go. This toothpaste’s ingredients include royal jelly and Australian propolis extract, known for nourishment and soothing properties. So I was like, yay! This sounds fabulous and I’m going to try it. Which I did. And I love it. I’ve been telling my Husband for 2 weeks now that my teeth feel better. I have really sensitive teeth and a lot of times my teeth will hurt when I only touch them with my toothbrush before I brush – even with sensitive toothpastes. So when I saw that this had nourishing and soothing properties, that’s what sold me right away. And it is very soothing. I actually look forward to brushing my teeth now. It has a very mild mint flavor with a backnote of honey.

So, I thought well, before I blog about this amazing toothpaste that I’m enjoying so much, I’d better find out what it uses to strengthen teeth since it does not contain fluoride.

There in the ingredients it says: Theobroma Cacao (Cocoa Extract). I thought well, perhaps that’s for flavor? But oh no… It strengthens and re-mineralizes your teeth! How fabulous is that?

I’ve been doing my own research on this, and I have to say that this is not a claim by or from Avon. Theobroma Cacao (Cocoa Extract) is an ingredient that is used in their (Perioe) toothpaste and I’ve done my own research into the “why” they used this instead of fluoride.

Here are several of my sources:

Medicinal Foods, Health Hub, NCBI Dental Research Journal

A quote from the Wallstreet Journal as posted on Medicinal Foods.com:

“Dental Research: Theobromine, the Chocolate-Based Active Ingredient in Theodent™ Toothpaste, Works Better Than Fluoride to Strengthen Teeth.” –The Wall Street Journal

Shared from MedicinalFoods.com:

A peer-reviewed study investigated the enamel strengthening ability of Theobromine to repair, heal cavities and remineralize teeth.

Measuring the hardness of the tooth, the report showed Theobromine’s ability to expand the Apatite Crystals that are involved in hardening tooth enamel. This Study in a well-respected Dental Journal shows that Theobromine in Cacao remineralizes teeth better than fluoride.

Is cacao truly as the Maya believed, a “Gift from God?”

Well, Theobromine literally means, “Food of the Gods” so go figure!

More research shows that theobromine, is far better for your teeth than your average toothpaste that contains fluoride.

So there you have it, and along with the amazing benefits of propolis and royal jelly. Here is a blurb from Dentistrywithaheart.com regarding propolis for dental use.

First, it kills oral bacteria and prevents them from thriving. Second, it makes it harder for oral bacteria to form plaque, which sticks to the teeth and increases the potency of acid attack on enamel.

I hope this post has interested you as much as it has me in what we’re using to clean our teeth.

I also hope that you’ll give the new Perioe Royal Black Bee Honey Mint Toothpaste a try for yourself.

Earl Grey Tea and Mint-Flavored Tooth Balm in Fun Vintage-Inspired Packaging

New Perioe Vintage-Inspired Tooth Balm Products from Avon

I say, would you care for a spot of Earl Grey – Tooth Balm? Yes, that’s what I said, Earl Grey and Mint Tooth Balm.

I promised you some fun dental care items, didn’t I?

As soon as I saw these in Avon’s What’s New Representative Preview Book, I knew I had to give them a try. How cool do these look?

But first, a little background info for you on the Perioe brand and what it’s all about. The Perioe Toothpaste band was launched in 1981 by LG — the new parent company of Avon, so this is an LG product. The Perioe brand was named so because of the word periodontal and the main focus of the brand is to help maintain oral health beyond just the teeth. Each of their products has a special function that takes into consideration one’s overall oral care. (Source: Korea.net) They are also lauded for using natural ingredients.

One of the coolest things about these particular Perioe Tooth Balms offered through Avon is that they are – Ahem… flavored by professional perfumers, thank you very much. Fancy, schmancy. There are 3 flavor choices for you: Lemon Basil Mint, Earl Grey Tea Mint, and Eucalyptus Mint (with activated charcoal).

Which is your favorite?

I of course chose the Earl Grey Mint to try first. It was a tough decision between that and the Lemon Basil.

Earl Grey Tea and Mint Toothpaste

As you can see from my photo, the tooth balm does arrived sealed under the cap.

Here is Avon’s formal description:

Enjoy your aah moment of zen with this Earl Grey tea and mint-flavored tooth balm, flavored by professional perfumers. It’s not a paste…it’s a luxurious balm for teeth. Lusciously textured with rich flavor and a sparkling fresh aftertaste. Not to mention, the phosphate formula will make your smile super bright. Fluoride-free, cruelty-free and paraben-free for your green and healthy life. 3.5 oz. net wt. Want more flavors? Brush up with Perioe Tooth Balm Toothpaste in Charcoal Eucalyptus Mint and Lemon Basil Mint.

FEATURES
• Phosphate formula makes your smile super bright
• Vintage-inspired design
• Flouride-free, paraben-free and cruelty-free

And it does taste really good! At first I got the mint – not an overpowering mint – but nice and fresh. The more I brushed, the more the Earl Grey tea flavor came forward. It is like a nice herbal flavor. Quite different from the ordinary.

Now, I know you caught a glimpse of those cute toothbrushes, didn’t you? Not to worry, I wasn’t going to leave them out.

Perioe Tooth Balm Brushes

Can you spot something different about these toothbrushes? Look at the bristles. They are all going horizontally. This allows you to floss between your teeth as you’re brushing. Brilliant!

Horizontal pattern bristles for deep cleaning between the teeth.

Did you also notice that these come 2 to a pack? I’m taking the red and white for me, and giving the black and white one to my Hubby to use. I really enjoyed using this toothbrush. The brush bristles are nice and soft, so they were very easy on my gums. I was able to reach way to the back of my mouth easily as it is a short headed brush. It has a nice width, so I felt like I got good coverage on all my teeth, and of course it was great for my front teeth (gotta shine that smile) with the layout of the bristles.

Perioe Tooth Balm Brushes from LG and Avon

These are listed at $7.00 for a two-pack of Tooth Balm Brushes. The Tooth Balms are also listed at $7.00 each. Here is a link to the Tooth Balm lineup. Scroll down a bit on this page and you’ll find some other Perioe brand oral products – Himalaya Pink Salt Toothpaste and Toothbrushes.

Okay gang! I hope enjoyed today’s blog post with all the fancy tooth balms and horizontal tooth balm brushes, and that you’ll treat yourself and give these a try. These look really cool on the sink area too. Gives you and your bathroom a fun spruce-up!

I’ll be back with more Avon goodness soon. I hope you enjoy your weekend!
